Stock Gallery Directors

Hello Everyone!
November was a great month for stock. You can review the Daily Deviations for the month
here and a selection of other quality stock added to the gallery
here. This month we saw many new accounts created offering high quality stock! Since there are always new stock users and providers joining deviantART, I thought it might be a good idea to review some basics for both new stock artists and those that use stock.
What Is Stock

Stock Photographs and Images are uploaded for others to use in digital or traditional art. They can be incorporated into art or used as reference. In most cases, you are required to credit and notify stock artists once you upload your work to deviantART. However, it is imperative that you review individual artists requirements or rules to see if there are any exceptions. Usage rules can be found in the deviation descriptions or in journals (often there are links to journal rules in the descriptions).
It can sometimes be confusing navigating rules from account to account so we are working on something that may make this easier in the near future.
Also, just like other galleries, stock receives Daily Deviations. Please do not post, 'why is this stock a DD' on works we feature or we will poke you with our
bloody fingers.
Stock Basics

Have you ever considered starting a stock account or are new and could use some tips? Below are 3 of my favorite tutorials prepared by ~
AttempteStock- The-Stock-Account-Guide - this tutorial reviews the basics for getting started. Such as, setting up you account, avatar, rules, etc.
- Preparing-Stock-Images-for-dA - this tutorial offers suggestions on choosing which images to upload. Often it is not necessary to upload every single image from a particular shoot. Though not necessary, making slight adjustments such as rotating and cropping your stock can be beneficial.
- Guide-to-Stock-Part-I - is a good technical tutorial that offers suggestions with specific camera settings among other things.
- There are also many other stock tutorials here on deviantART. I have a listing of a few others displayed in my side journal.
Another important aspect of managing a stock account is to place your stock in the proper category. The probability of your stock being utilize is greatly diminished if it is mis-categorizing. For example, uploading portrait photographs in miscellaneous (something I see frequently).
Gallery descriptions are provided to assist you in choosing the appropriate category for your photographs. You can access the gallery descriptions within the submission menu. Once you have navigated to a specific category, click the Gallery Info. link at the bottom of the box to review the description. If you have any questions about where to place something, don't guess. Please contact `
UnicornReality or myself.
And, most importantly familiarize yourself with the Stock Image Guidelines before you begin uploading stock! Community Input

This section contains information provided to us by the community for inclusion in this update. We posted in both the
Stock Forum and in chat (
#ARSTOCK ) for input.
Also, please join us in congratulating `
pendlestock and `
shelldevil who both recently achieved Senior Status!
Helping Others

The stock gallery is massive and unfortunately a large number of people providing stock are not well informed about things such as minimum image guidelines or placing their stock in the proper categories. Reporting violations is one way to cleanse the gallery, but educating people would really be more effective. A little friendly help could go a long way in helping to reduce the violations in our gallery.
If you know people that are in need of help, reach out to them via Notes and offer them help or have them contact `
UnicornReality or myself. I have seen some people post harsh messages on deviations and this is not the best approach. I believe people will be more receptive to and appreciate a friendly Note.
Unrestricted Use Stock

The frequency of new accounts being added to the
Unrestricted Use Stock Directory is declining.
Unrestricted stock can be used for both personal and commercial projects. You are not required to obtain permission prior to using the stock off site. The only requirements are that the stock provider be notified and credited.
</i>
If you know someone that offers their stock in this manner, please have them contact us so we can add then to the directory.
Daily Deviations

I'm thinking of starting to do some stock photos as soon as I get a stand for my camera (:
thank you.
